From 1 January 2025, Het Financieele Dagblad (FD) is no longer available via the Nexis Uni database. This is due to the discontinuation of the joint licence, which was arranged through SURF, University Libraries & National Library (UKB), and the Knowledge and Expertise Network for University Libraries (SHB).
Why is access being discontinued?
The agreement with FD Mediagroep was managed through SURF, the organisation that oversees online services for higher education. The main reason for the discontinuation is the way FD Mediagroep collects and processes user data.
Universities use standardised access through IP range or SURFconext, where data is shared minimally and anonymised wherever possible. However, FD Mediagroep introduced a mandatory login method, which required users to create an account and agree to the collection of their data. SURF and the universities deemed this approach to be inconsistent with their privacy regulations and public values.
What does this mean?
Because FD Mediagroep refused to remove the mandatory login, the subscription was not renewed. As a result, Het Financieele Dagblad will no longer be accessible via Nexis Uni from 2025 onward.
